Lord of the Revels (Baird) and the Lady of the Hearth (Daircann)

Picture
Picture
Appearance:
These two deities change their appearance based on who is viewing them.  What is more revealing is describing a typical visit to their home.  Daircann will quickly have you feeling you have arrived at the home of your dearest friend who effortlessly ensures you are comfortable, fed, …. In a short time, you will have shared your greatest worries and received the best advice possible of how to make your life happier and your relationships better.  As the evening goes on, Baird will take over the lead in hosting duties.  You will remember it turned into the greatest party ever.  You will be unlikely to remember your shyest companion dancing on the table and singing bawdy songs with a very sexually suggestive dance.  After all, at that point, everything just became a blur.  You will remember Daircann giving you an amazing hangover cure that brought you back from near death to just slightly miserable the next morning. You will also remember, to your annoyance, Daircann not being affected at all despite him drinking, by himself, that barrel of …..  The other clear indications that you are in the presence of Baird and Daircann are: one or both of them will produce the most beautiful music you have ever heard, people are just naturally happier around them, and children – especially- are drawn to both of them.  Of all the Gods, these two have the most loving relationship and are never separated.  In battle, Baird will use his shield to protect Daircann as she uses her longbow.  At closer range, Baird will use a giant 2 handed sword while Daircann uses her shield and rapier to protect her husband.  Not surprisingly, both sing/chant during battle to inspire and assist their allies while discouraging and hampering their foes.

Symbols: (as shown) An ancient drinking cup and a hearth.

Areas of Concern:
Family, home, love, sexuality, music, and all forms of entertainment.  Unlike other pairs of deities, there is no division of powers/concerns with this pair.  The only difference is the male/female aspect each brings to a concern.  Thus, family concerns belong equally to both – with Baird taking the father angle and Daircann the mother’s aspect.  This sharing, scholars speculate, is due to the musical aspect of these deities: while both are extremely talented soloists, their harmonies far exceed anything they do separately…..

Duties of the Priesthood:
These clerics are concerned with relationships, the home, and entertainment.
Thus, clerics of Baird and Daircann are expected to:
1.    Act as counselors to ensure relationships work.
2.    Monitor and ensure families and individuals receive the support they need (do grief counselling after a death, ensure children are fed and educated….).  They also help people start new lives if an old relationship needs to be broken (often called in after trials to ensure the criminal’s family is looked after, not just the criminal’s victims).
3.    Monitor and assist the Colleges of Bards to ensure that while their talents are developed for the good and joy of all; bards do not use their powers for mind control….
4.    Organize and support events and resources/locations that help to bring joy to the life of the people (festivals, music/acting schools …..).
5.     Educate and advise people about the skills necessary to run a home and family (they are a resource for parenting advice, cooking, cleaning, ….. which most people pick up from a worthy family member, but the clerics step in where that kind of support is not available).
Note: Clerics specialize in these roles and each role has requirements.  Thus, those clerics who are associated with music, entertainment…. are expected to be able to perform themselves.  Likewise, those counselling others about relationships are only allowed to do so after they have enough life experience and relationships to know what they are talking about.  In this case, those clerics would be expected to have successfully married and have children of their own, plus have served an ‘apprenticeship’ working with an experienced counselor.

Powers:
1. Clerics are able to cast “Zone of Truth” and “Detect Magic” once per day.
2.  Clerics are able to cast “Neutralize Charm Person” and “Mirror of Truth” once per day..

1st Level Spell:  “Neutralize Charm Person”  Casting time: 1 action.  Area of Effect: 10’ per level of caster.  Components:  Discordant note from a musical instrument or chant   The caster of this spell can attempt to neutralize the effects of a charm person or similar spell on 1 individual/level of the caster.  The caster and the original caster roll a Wisdom Check Contest.  Both get their character level as a bonus.  In addition, the DM decides if the victim of the Charm may add or subtract his or her Wisdom Check bonus to the caster’s Wisdom Check (consider an unwilling victim versus a willing victim of the Charm spell).  All parties within listening distance are aware of the attempt to neutralize the spell.

1st Level Spell:  “Mirror of Truth”  Casting time: 1 action.  Area of Effect: 1 person.  Components: A mirror or other highly reflective surface.  Duration: 1 minute.  The caster of this spell casts the spell upon the target person and the mirror.  There is no saving throw as the target person must agree to be the target of the spell.  The target person gazes into a mirror for 1 minute.  During that 1 minute, the person sees him/herself clearly with both their positive and negative characteristics pointed out about his/her physical appearance and personality.  Other clerics have referred to this spell as “The Reality Check Spell.”
